Frequently Asked Questions
Gilgooma offers an authentic farmstay experience, with comfortable facilities, space to unwind, and a chance to connect with the land in meaningful ways. Whether you're planning a solo trip, family getaway or group event, this page answers common questions to help you prepare.
Where is Gilgooma and how do I get there?
Gilgooma is located approximately 35 minutes from Coonamble in north-west NSW. After booking, you’ll receive directions via email. Google Maps will get you here accurately, but please avoid using Apple Maps, which may be incorrect.
Do I need a 4WD, and what’s the road like?
Not at all. In dry weather, most 2WD vehicles reach Gilgooma easily. The final stretch includes less than a kilometre of unsealed road, which is flat and usually well maintained. We’ll update you if weather impacts access.
Can I bring a caravan, camper trailer or rooftop tent?
Absolutely. Our sites are unmarked and unallocated, so you’ll have the freedom to choose a spot that suits you — whether it’s near the kitchen, under a shady tree, or out in the open with big sky views.
What types of stays do you offer?
We offer spacious unpowered bush campsites, powered drive-through sites, fully powered cabins with air conditioning, and Big Bertha — our family-friendly onsite caravan. Each option offers a different way to experience the bush, with comfort and character.
Are there toilets, showers and drinking water?
Yes. All guests have access to clean flushing toilets and hot showers. Potable artesian bore water is available throughout the campground for drinking and cooking.
Can I cook, and what’s in the kitchen?
Yes. The shared camp kitchen includes hot water, a BBQ, pizza oven, fridge, convection microwave, toaster, kettle, cutlery, crockery, and basic prep space. You’re also welcome to cook at your own camp.
Is there power, phone reception or Wi-Fi?
The campground is powered in designated areas, and cabins have full mains electricity and air conditioning. There is no mobile reception on site, but free guest Wi-Fi is available.
Do you offer local products for sale?
Yes. We sell our own range of saltbush seasoning, saltbush damper mix, and enamel mugs. Guests are also welcome to pre-order lamb packs to cook during their stay.
Can I get involved in farm life?
Yes. Our immersive experiences allow guests to take part in the day’s real work — from the sheep yards to seasonal cropping activities. Experiences vary depending on what's happening at the time, and are available to guests who book in advance.
Do you offer guided tours or demonstrations?
Yes. Personalised, behind-the-scenes tours of the property are available by arrangement. These are designed to give visitors a deeper understanding of how a working Australian farm operates, without a rigid itinerary.
What’s the best time of year to visit?
Each season offers something unique. Autumn and spring bring ideal weather, while winter offers a chance to witness lambing. The open landscape is striking year-round.
Is Gilgooma suitable for families?
Yes. Children are welcome to enjoy the space and freedom, especially with supervision. For those participating in immersive farm activities, safety briefings and boundaries are clearly provided.
Are pets allowed?
Yes. We are pet-friendly and welcome well-behaved dogs, birds, or other animals. Pets must remain within the campground area and be cleaned up after — but they do not need to be on a lead.
Can we book Gilgooma for a group stay or event?
Yes. Gilgooma is an excellent venue for retreats, events, corporate offsites, photo shoots, workshops and school excursions. We offer exclusive booking options, flexible site use, and can support custom itineraries to suit your needs. Whether it’s a quiet leadership retreat or a creative team weekend, get in touch to explore what's possible.
Are there snakes or other wildlife?
Gilgooma is home to native wildlife including kangaroos, emus, goannas, echidnas and birdlife. Snakes may be present in warmer months, so we recommend wearing closed shoes and being mindful when walking.
What should I pack?
Once booked, you’ll receive a detailed Welcome Compendium. In general, bring: torch or headlamp, hat, closed shoes, layered clothing, food, drinks, camp gear if camping, and your own bedding if you've selected a BYO option.
What’s your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made more than 7 days in advance can be refunded or rescheduled. Cancellations with fewer than 7 days’ notice are non-refundable.
How do I book, and what happens when I arrive?
All bookings are made online via our website. After booking, you’ll receive a confirmation email with directions, access information, and a Welcome Compendium. Some guests are greeted in person, while others check in independently — either way, everything will be ready and you can contact us if needed.
What can I do while I’m there?
Relax, wander, stargaze, soak in the artesian bath, enjoy a campfire (weather permitting), or take yourself on a self-guided walk or drive. You’ll receive maps and local recommendations on arrival.
Are there walking trails and scenic drives?
Yes. We’ve mapped self-guided walks across the property and into the nearby Pilliga West Conservation Area. Day trip itineraries to nearby attractions and towns are also provided for guests.
Can I stargaze or swim?
Absolutely. Gilgooma offers clear, dark skies perfect for stargazing. The artesian bath provides a unique way to soak and relax. Dam swims may also be possible depending on season and safety.
Is Gilgooma inclusive and welcoming?
Yes. All respectful guests are welcome, including solo travellers, families, couples and LGBTQIA+ visitors. We aim to offer a comfortable and genuine stay for all.
Do you follow sustainable practices?
We focus on low-impact tourism where possible — encouraging guests to tread lightly, conserve water, and leave no trace. While we’re not off-grid, we’re committed to looking after this land for the long haul.
Who is Gilgooma ideal for?
Travellers seeking authentic, nature-based experiences in a rural setting. Whether you’re road-tripping, working remotely, craving quiet, or looking to learn something new — you’ll feel at home here.
